How The City of Miami Got Its Name

Long before Europeans came, there were many Native American tribes inhabiting South Florida, such as the Tequesta and the Mayaimi. The latter group settled around a great lake that, they called "Mayaimi," which in their own language meant "big water." This lake today is known as Lake Okeechobee and lies some 90 miles northwest of present-day Miami.
