How The City of Miami Got Its Name
Miami is that bright, colorful city located at the southeastern tip of Florida, celebrated worldwide for beautiful beaches and a wild nightlife. But do you know what the history behind the name of such an iconic city like Miami is? The story behind Miami's name is rooted in the area's rich Native American history and involves a fascinating journey through time.
The Mayaimi Tribe and the "Big Water"
Long before Europeans came, there were many Native American tribes inhabiting South Florida, such as the Tequesta and the Mayaimi. The latter group settled around a great lake that, they called "Mayaimi," which in their own language meant "big water." This lake today is known as Lake Okeechobee and lies some 90 miles northwest of present-day Miami.
It is said that the Miami River, which runs near the center of the city, was named in reference to this tribe and their "big lake," the modern Lake Okeechobee. Early Spanish explorers and settlers applied the name of "Mayaimi" or "Maymi" to this river, which would eventually evolved into today's spelling: "Miami”.
The Tequesta: Miami's First Inhabitants
Another very important element of Miami's history was the Tequesta tribe, who populated the area at the mouth of the Miami River for thousands of years before the arrival of the Spanish colonizers. In 1998, archaeologists discovered a series of holes forming a circle in the bedrock limestone that lies near the mouth of the river. This site, now recognized worldwide as the Miami Circle, contained hundreds of artifacts and is believed to have been a sacred site for the Tequesta people. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark, one that commences history right before everyone showing the rich Native pattern of this region.
Julia Tuttle: The Mother of Miami
So fast forward to the end of the 19th century, when Julia Tuttle, a woman who was born wealthy in Cleveland but came down to South Florida on a visit and simply fell in love with the place, was farming citrus in the area just south of the Miami River.
She was aware at that time that for this dream to be realized, it meant getting railway magnate Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway into Miami, Florida. Seizing the day once the Great Freeze of 1894-1895 had decimated the citrus groves in Florida, she posted Flagler a box of oranges with orange blossoms from her Miami groves, untouched by such fierce weather. Flagler agreed to do so in return for land from Tuttle and other local landowners after being greatly impressed by the area's resilience.
Out of her labor of love, The new City of Miami's charter was adopted and in effect as of July 28, 1896. The population of the newly christened City was slightly more than over 300. Julia Tuttle, the state's "Mother of Miami" had indeed given birth to a new city. It would become the country's most emblematic city.
