Why Is Little Haiti Called Lemon City?
Before it was known as Little Haiti, this vibrant Miami neighborhood was called Lemon City. Named for the abundant lemon trees that once grew in the area, Lemon City was a thriving pioneer community in the late 1800s. As Haitian immigrants settled in the neighborhood during the late 20th century, it took on a new identity and became known as Little Haiti, while still preserving its rich history as Lemon City.
